Some typical filtering methods

Image

Adsorption. Activated carbon: granular, fibre or bituminous.

Adsorption filters absorb certain materials into the surface of adsorption mass, and as a result smell, taste, color, organic compounds and several radioactive isotopes can be removed from water. Certain qualities of activated carbon can also be used to remove radon and heavy metals, as well as antibiotic, medicine and hormone residues to some extent.

Ion exchange.

Ion exchange can absorb certain ion formed compounds. Medias are divided into cation and anion exchange medias, as well as composite medias. A more extensive purification efficiency can be achieved with mixed media. Harmfull impurities are changed into harmless ions such as natrium or chloride. Ion exchange filters are typically used to remove reduced iron, manganese, nitrates and uranium, as well as remove limescale.

In water purification, ion exchange masses are usually used to enhance the working of activated carbon.

KDF redox reaction

The redox reaction is a chemical reaction where one or more electrons move entirely or partially from one atom to another. With the reaction harmful impurities are transformed into harmless reaction products. The method has proven to be efficient against micro organisms, algae, chlorine, hydrogen sulfide and heavy metals (aluminium, arsenic, cadmium, iron, lead, mercury etc.).

Ultra filtration

Ultra filtration is a mechanic purification method where the water to be purified is directed through a semipermeable surface with supply pressure. The filtering removes particle formed compounds and ensures the hygienic quality of prduced water, in terms of bacteria, protozoans and algae, removing organic compounds. A typical sieve size is 0,01μm (0,0001 millimeters), while for example the smallest bacteria are approximately 0,2μm.

Reverse osmosis

With reverse osmosis impurities are removed through a semipermeable membrane with help from water pressure. The method ensures a hygienic quality of water in terms of bacteria, protozoans, algae and also viruses. Because the reverse osmosis method also removes from water almost all minerals, salts, organic compounds, metals and heavy metals, as well as all microbes, water is threafter almost as pure as distilled water. Sieve size is 0,0001μm (0,0000001 millimeters).
